AviaMedix and UCSan Diego Health System are proud to present their first Symposium on Pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE) as a treatment for Chronic Pulmonary Hypertension.
The UC San Diego Health System is a world leader in pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE), also known as pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA). Developed at UC San Diego Health System, PTE is a complex surgery that removes potentially fatal blood clots from major vessels in the lung. These clots frequently cannot be eliminated with medication and by blocking blood flow to the lungs, bring on detrimental vascular changes causing pulmonary hypertension which can lead to heart failure and death.
The PTE program at UC San Diego Health System has been designated by the American College of Chest Physicians as a Center of Excellence nationwide. More PTE procedures have been performed by UCSD Health System (nearly 3000) than any other medical center and UCSD enjoys the highest success rate in the world for pulmonary thromboendarterectomy. The PTE program at UCSD has demonstrated improved success rates over the last few years going from a mortality rate of 2.2% between 2006-2010, to less than 1% over the past 2 years. This rate of postoperative mortality is the lowest known in the world where this procedure is performed to reverse heart failure, making it more effective than lung transplantation.
